Gamepuzzles Annual Pentomino Excellence Award for 2017 "73 No-Hole 4-Way Pentomino Symmetries" |
In 2005, Kadon established a special annual award to be presented to the individual or organization that created the best new pentomino or polyomino idea of the year. Each award is a unique custom design. In 2017, the award went to Livio Zucca and his international team of 5 esteemed puzzlers for his project of finding every solution of 4-way symmetry with the 12 pentominoes with no interior holes. The other honorees are: Edo Timmermans, Dario Uri, Gong Yongming, Maarten Bos, and Derek Kisman. Congratulations, all! The award (above) shows all 73 solutions on a 9x9 square built with the 12 pentominoes plus the L and Z hexomino (Livio's initials highlighted in blue), and a central name plate. The Z is backwards, and computer search showed that no solution exists with it turned around. Here is the solution with each piece outlined:
This challenge was proposed by Livio Zucca on the Puzzle Fun Facebook page. It was exciting to see new solutions show up day by day. Derek Kisman verified by computer that 73 is the total count. A formal certificate accompanied the award:
