This is an illustration which depicts the status of the Brown Pelican as an endangered species in three areas of its seven-state range. This is portrayed literally by the pie chart and metaphorically by the illustration below it.
The pelicans were drawn on pier posts by the artist because that is the image that carries with it our strongest sentiments about the pelican. The pelicans at the far left are seen most clearly but gradually seem to disappear, as they progress from pier post to pier post. This is intended as a metaphor for the dwindling numbers of pelicans and the fact that this image may be seen less and less.
The 8x10" illustration employs the artist's drawings, which were imported into Adobe Illustrator.
