To create beauty. To capture a spark of cosmic truth within a
model you can hold in your eye, your mind, your hand...and move
it about at will. To transmute chaos into order and define that
order in a myriad lovely ways. To start from a singularity, and
build to those levels of complexity that most enchant you. To
weave diversity into the sweetest harmony. To explore roads as yet
not dreamed of, perchance to create beauty.

Rainbow RombixRAINBOW
ROMBIX
®
# RAINBOW ROMBIX®

This is the 24-sided embodiment of the Rombix concept discovered, developed and patented by Alan Schoen. It contains six different rhomb sizes. When paired in every possible concave combination, they yield 30 "twin" tiles. Including the 6 unit rhombs, the 36 pieces can tile the circle in thousands of ways and let the puzzler explore the deeper mathematical properties of the Rombix phenomenon. We recommend this set for advanced puzzlers only, or for those with a mathematical background. Keep out of reach of small children, as the more slender rhombs tend to have sharp tips. All-acrylic construction has transparent rainbow-tinted tiles in a 15" square black tray. Rainbow Rombix displayed on its easel is a striking visual art object. #$115

Dezign-8 Read the Games 100 review

DEZIGN-8TM

Chosen for the Games 100 list — one of the best games of 2001. This elegant concept uses eight different tile patterns. Every combination of 1, 2, 3 and 4 paths exiting from a square, with enough multiples in a strategic mix, allows the creation of the most intricate designs. Just match the paths. A strange fact — no matter how you connect the paths, the number of separate groups will always equal the number of closed loops formed. Latest discovery:  up to 19 are possible! The laser-cut, hand-inlaid acrylic tiles are framed so the 14" set can be displayed on its easel as an ever-changing work of art. We offer it in four color combinations. Rules for several games are included. For 1 to 4 players, ages 10 to adult. #$155

Triangule-8 TRIANGULE-8TM
... by Ward Hollins and Kate Jones

Triangule-8 sample tileThere are 19 patterns for cutting an octagon into 6 triangles (one sample shown at right). Each type of triangle is defined by its own color. Supplemented by one spare tile (wild card) and interspersed with square islands, the octagonal tiles create many fascinating color patterns: an everchanging work of art. Especially challenging: the "maximum sprouts" problem—only parallelograms, no chevrons, with the smallest triangles. See the new record: 20. The 11½ x 14" tray holds the 20 tiles in a 4x5 array. Owner's manual includes many shapes to create/solve outside the tray, as well. All-acrylic construction combines opaque and frosted mirror colors. Custom color orders invited, in white (shown at left) or black tray.

Dazzle
DAZZLETM
... created by Charles Butler and Kent Forrester

Read the Games 100 review A Games 100 selection—one of the best games of 2009! There are 30 patterns for dividing a dodecagon into 12 triangles, where the triangles form single, double and triple "pie slices". Each size of pie is defined by its own color within a tile, with each tile having two of each size, or 6 sections. Same colors are never adjacent within the same tile, and every permutation of the three colors is included. The all-acrylic tiles are about 2.75" in diameter, with frosted mirror colors of blue, purple and silver. For Dazzle puzzles, all touching edges must match. Arrangements such as the image above create triangular spaces between tiles. When you surround these spaces with three edges of the same color or with 3 different colors, you've formed a "dazzle". Score points for tile placements, with at least one edge matched by color. Earn bonus points for surrounding dazzles with all the same shape pie or three different sizes of pie. The tile design that grows on the table between the players is a work of art in itself. Packs in compact box for storage, or inquire about wall-mounting frame. For 1 to 7 players, ages 10 to adult. #$125
